In a significant crackdown on food adulteration, Bengaluru police have arrested a couple involved in the production and supply of fake ghee to various shops across the city. The operation uncovered a sophisticated racket that posed serious health risks to consumers.
The Raid and Arrest
Acting on a specific tip-off, officials from the Bengaluru Police Commissioner's Task Force conducted a raid at a residential property in Kothanur area. The operation led to the arrest of Pradeep and his wife Lakshmi, who were allegedly running an illegal ghee manufacturing unit from their home.
During the raid conducted on Wednesday, authorities seized substantial evidence including 80 kg of adulterated ghee ready for distribution. The police also confiscated manufacturing equipment and raw materials used in the production process.
Manufacturing Process Revealed
Investigations revealed that the couple employed a dangerous method to create counterfeit ghee. They would mix palm oil with artificial flavoring and coloring agents to mimic the appearance and taste of genuine ghee. This adulterated product was then packaged and sold to unsuspecting shopkeepers and consumers.
The accused had been operating this illegal business for several months, supplying the fake ghee to various local shops and establishments throughout Bengaluru. Their operation took advantage of the high demand for ghee, especially during festival seasons and special occasions.
Health Implications and Legal Action
Consumption of adulterated ghee poses severe health risks, including digestive problems, heart issues, and long-term health complications. Food safety experts emphasize that palm oil mixed with artificial additives lacks the nutritional benefits of pure ghee and may contain harmful substances.
The police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Both accused were produced before a local court and remanded to police custody for further investigation.
Authorities are now working to identify all the shops and establishments that received supplies from the couple. Consumers who may have purchased the adulterated product are advised to be vigilant and report any suspicious food items to the food safety department.
This case highlights the ongoing challenge of food adulteration in urban markets and the importance of strict enforcement of food safety regulations to protect public health.
