Bengaluru-Trained Canine Champion K9 Babi Triumphs at National Police Meet
In a proud moment for Bengaluru's canine training community, a five-year-old Belgian Malinois named K9 Babi wagged her tail in triumphant delight after securing top honors at the prestigious national stage. Trained at the Central Reserve Police Force's (CRPF) Dog Breeding and Training School (DBTS) located in the city, Babi emerged as the undisputed best canine overall at the All-India Police Duty Meet for the 2025–26 season, which concluded this past weekend in Nagpur.
Victory Against Stiff Competition
Competing in a fiercely contested arena, K9 Babi faced off against more than 100 highly skilled dogs representing 29 different teams from state police departments and various paramilitary forces across India. Not only did she clinch the overall championship title, but she also secured a decisive first position in the specialized tracker dog category, showcasing her exceptional abilities in scent detection and pursuit.
From Early Promise to National Acclaim
Bred and raised entirely within the Bengaluru facility, Babi demonstrated early signs of remarkable potential that were meticulously honed through rigorous and structured training programs at the DBTS. Officials from the CRPF emphasized that her historic win is a direct result of consistent training methodologies, extensive real-world operational exposure, and precise handling techniques that have been perfected over years.
Her skills were not merely cultivated in controlled training environments. Babi proved her formidable mettle in the challenging and hazardous terrain of Bijapur in Chhattisgarh, a region significantly affected by Naxalite activities. Deployed there on active duty, she operated under constant pressure and unpredictable conditions, consistently delivering reliable results that earned her a reputation as a dependable and no-nonsense performer in the field.
Strategic Preparation and Handler Partnership
Recognizing her outstanding potential for competitive excellence, the CRPF strategically brought Babi back to Bengaluru in 2023 to undergo specialized fine-tuning of her skills specifically for national-level competitions. The training focus intensively targeted sharpening precision, enhancing control, and ensuring repeatable high performance—key qualities that ultimately distinguished her from the competition at the Nagpur meet.
Equally crucial to her sweeping success was the profound and synergistic bond she shares with her dedicated handler, Basavaraj. Their impeccable coordination, flawless timing, and deep mutual trust translated into seamless and flawless performances throughout the demanding event, highlighting the critical role of human-canine partnerships in such high-stakes scenarios.
Team Bengaluru's Dominant Performance
Adding to the celebratory atmosphere, the CRPF's K9 unit trained in Bengaluru collectively bagged the highly coveted team championship trophy, underscoring the facility's excellence in canine training. In individual achievements, K9 Stoney was named the second-best narcotics detection dog, while Babi, along with teammates Viggy, Stoney, and Greta, accumulated multiple gold medals across diverse categories including tracking, explosive detection, and narcotics search operations.
