Bengaluru: Drunk driver drags motorcycle for 500m

A shocking scene of reckless driving unfolded on a busy Bengaluru flyover on Wednesday night, leaving commuters horrified and culminating in a dramatic public intervention and arrest.

Flyover Fury: SUV Spotted Dragging Motorcycle

The incident occurred on the Summanahalli flyover in Kamakshipalya, west Bengaluru. Startled motorists witnessed an SUV being driven at high speed with sparks flying from underneath it. As they moved closer, they discovered the source of the sparks: a Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycle was lodged at the front of the vehicle. Despite other road users shouting and trying to alert him, the SUV driver continued to speed ahead, dragging the two-wheeler along the road.

Several commuters recorded videos of the bizarre and dangerous scene on their mobile phones, which quickly spread across social media platforms, drawing widespread outrage.

Public Interception and Drunk Driving Confession

Angered by the driver's blatant disregard for safety, a group of commuters finally managed to intercept the SUV near the Nayandahalli junction. The driver was stopped and subsequently handed over to the police.

A breath analyser test confirmed the worst fears: the driver, identified as Srinivas KV from Kunigal, was under the influence of alcohol. Police investigation revealed that Srinivas, who owns a wine shop in Kunigal, Tumakuru district, was driving towards Sunkadakatte when the accident occurred.

In his complaint to the Kamakshipalya police, the motorcyclist, Rohit S., described the terrifying moment. "The SUV rear-ended my bike, throwing me off. As I fell, I saw the SUV continue to move with my Bullet stuck in the front. It dragged the bike for nearly 500 metres before it got detached. The SUV then sped towards Nayandahalli," Rohit stated. Fortunately, he escaped the incident without any physical injuries.

Panic and Public Retribution

During questioning, Srinivas confessed to consuming alcohol, citing personal problems. He claimed he panicked after the initial collision and was completely unaware that the motorcycle was stuck to his vehicle. "When people shouted at me, I thought they were warning me about the accident," he told the police.

The police also stated that during the chase before his interception, Srinivas's SUV hit another car and a motorbike. The public's fury did not subside with his capture. Enraged bystanders allegedly assaulted Srinivas and damaged his SUV, smashing its windshield before the police could take full control of the situation.

The Kamakshipalya police have registered a case against Srinivas and are continuing their investigation into the full sequence of events. The incident has once again highlighted the severe dangers of drunk driving on Bengaluru's roads.
