Vendors plan legal challenge against footpath clearance
Vendors in Malleswaram, Bengaluru, have been asked to contribute Rs 5,000 each to fund a legal petition against the civic authorities' footpath clearance drive. The move comes as the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) intensifies efforts to clear encroachments from footpaths in the area.
According to sources, the vendors held a meeting on Monday to discuss the strategy and decided to file a petition in court seeking a stay on the eviction. The collection of funds is aimed at covering legal expenses and hiring a lawyer to represent their case.
Details of the contribution drive
Each vendor is expected to pay Rs 5,000, with the total amount to be pooled for the legal battle. The vendors argue that the footpath clearance would disrupt their livelihoods, as many have been selling goods on the footpaths for years. They claim that the authorities have not provided alternative spaces for them to relocate.
The BBMP, however, maintains that the clearance is necessary to ensure pedestrian safety and to comply with court orders on encroachment. The civic body has previously issued notices to vendors to vacate the footpaths.
Impact on local businesses and residents
The footpath vendors in Malleswaram are a common sight, offering a variety of goods from vegetables to clothing. Their sudden eviction could affect both their income and the convenience of local residents who rely on these vendors for daily purchases. Some residents have expressed support for the vendors, citing the lack of affordable alternatives.
On the other hand, pedestrian groups have welcomed the clearance drive, citing safety concerns. The issue highlights the ongoing conflict between urban development and informal livelihoods in Bengaluru.
