Bengaluru Entrepreneur Targeted in Elaborate Instagram Honeytrap and Extortion Scheme
A 31-year-old entrepreneur from Jayanagar, Bengaluru, has become the victim of a sophisticated honeytrap and extortion operation that originated on Instagram. The man alleges he was coerced into paying approximately Rs 12.5 lakh in cash and valuables, only for his private intimate videos to be maliciously shared with his wife despite the payments.
From Business Promotion to Personal Betrayal
According to the detailed police complaint filed by the victim, the entire ordeal began in August 2024 when he was actively seeking promotional opportunities for his business on the popular social media platform Instagram. During this professional outreach, he connected with a woman who initially presented herself as a potential business contact.
The two arranged to meet at a local café, where their relationship gradually evolved from professional to personal. What started as a business discussion allegedly transformed into a close personal connection over subsequent interactions.
The Extortion Demands and Threats
The situation took a sinister turn when the woman reportedly began making escalating financial demands. She allegedly claimed to have secretly recorded their private conversations and intimate moments during their encounters. Using this compromising material as leverage, she threatened to distribute the videos to the man's wife and other family members unless he paid her a staggering sum of Rs 1.5 crore.
Fearing social humiliation and damage to his family relationships, the entrepreneur complied with initial demands. He reportedly paid the woman Rs 10 lakh in cash and additionally surrendered valuable items including gold jewelry and an iPhone, collectively worth approximately Rs 2.5 lakh.
Betrayal Despite Compliance
In a cruel twist, even after receiving payments and valuables totaling around Rs 12.5 lakh, the accused woman not only continued to demand more money but also executed her threat. She allegedly forwarded the intimate videos directly to the victim's wife, causing severe emotional distress and violating his privacy despite his financial compliance.
Police Investigation and Legal Framework
Bengaluru police have registered a formal case under multiple sections of contemporary legislation. The primary charge falls under BNS Section 308, which specifically addresses extortion. Additionally, the case invokes provisions of the Information Technology Act, including Section 66E for punishment regarding privacy violations and Section 67 concerning the transmission of obscene material through electronic means.
A senior police officer involved in the investigation stated, "We are actively working to trace and apprehend the accused individual. Once she is in custody, her electronic devices will be immediately sent for forensic data retrieval and analysis to gather comprehensive evidence." The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to identify and locate the suspect.
This case highlights the growing risks associated with digital interactions and serves as a stark reminder of how seemingly innocent business connections on social media platforms can escalate into serious cybercrimes with devastating personal consequences.
