A shocking incident of alleged revenge and violence unfolded in Bengaluru's Basaveshwaranagar area in the early hours of Tuesday, leaving a 45-year-old grocery shop owner fighting for her life. The victim, identified as Geeta, was allegedly set on fire by her 28-year-old tenant after she refused to convince her daughter to marry him.
The Midnight Attack in Bhovi Colony
The horrific event took place around 1 am at Bhovi Colony in Basaveshwaranagar. According to police, the accused, Muttu Abhimanyu, who ran a tea stall from a rented portion of Geeta's house, had developed feelings for her 19-year-old daughter. The young woman, a second-year BBA student, had already refused Abhimanyu's marriage proposal.
Undeterred, Abhimanyu then reportedly pressured Geeta to intervene and convince her daughter to accept him. When Geeta stood firm and refused his demand, it led to a heated argument between them around midnight.
Petrol from a Bottle and a Fatal Assault
Police investigations reveal that the argument turned violent when an enraged Abhimanyu, in a premeditated act, poured petrol on Geeta and set her ablaze. It is reported that he often kept petrol stored in an empty water bottle for emergencies. The flames immediately engulfed Geeta, who cried out in agony.
Her daughter rushed to the scene upon hearing her mother's screams, but by then, Abhimanyu had already fled the location. Neighbours, alerted by the commotion, played a crucial role in dousing the flames and quickly shifting the severely burned Geeta to Victoria Hospital for emergency treatment. Doctors have stated her condition remains critical.
Manhunt Launched for Absconding Tenant
The Basaveshwaranagar police have registered a case and launched a massive manhunt to apprehend the accused, Muttu Abhimanyu, who is currently absconding. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting a brutal case of alleged obsession and violence.
Further details from the police indicate that Geeta's husband, Vijay Kumar, a civil contractor, passed away a few years ago, leaving her to manage the household and business. The attack not only threatens her life but also underscores the vulnerabilities faced by single women managing property and tenants.
Authorities are piecing together the complete sequence of events and are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the swift arrest of the suspect. The case continues to be under active investigation.
