Bengaluru Police Crack Down on Organised Phone Theft Ring During IPL Match
In a significant breakthrough, Bengaluru city police have apprehended 13 persons, including nine juveniles from Jharkhand, for allegedly stealing at least 70 mobile phones from spectators during the IPL inaugural match held at M Chinnaswamy Stadium on March 28. The arrests follow a meticulous investigation that uncovered an organised gang targeting high-profile sporting events.
Investigation Launched After Multiple Complaints
On the night of the match, numerous spectators approached the Cubbon Park police station to report the theft of their mobile phones. Suspecting the involvement of an organised criminal network, and noting similar incidents during IPL matches in Chennai and Mumbai last year, police authorities swiftly formed special teams to delve into the case. This proactive approach was crucial in tracking down the perpetrators.
Digital Evidence Leads to Key Arrest
Utilising advanced digital evidence and surveillance techniques, officers successfully traced and arrested one of the key accused, Shubham Kumar, aged 26, from Jharkhand. Kumar was found staying in a hotel near Shivajinagar in Bengaluru. During intensive interrogation, he confessed that he, along with a group of minors, had travelled to Bengaluru two days before the match with the sole intention of stealing mobile phones in and around the stadium premises.
Recovery of Stolen Phones and Juvenile Detention
Based on Kumar's detailed statement, police detained three minor boys and recovered 21 stolen mobile phones from their possession. The juveniles were subsequently sent to a juvenile home, as per legal protocols. Investigations initially faced a setback when other suspects fled the city, but police persistence paid off as teams were dispatched to Jharkhand and Odisha, leading to the arrest of the remaining accused.
Arrests and Recovery Details
Apart from Shubham Kumar, the arrested adults include Eshan Kumar, 23, Sanjeeth Kumar, 24, and Sohan Kumar, 23. In total, police recovered 75 mobile phones, of which 70 were confirmed as stolen from spectators, while five belonged to the accused themselves. DCP (Central) Akshay M Hakay stated that the four adult accused were produced before a local court and taken into police custody for further questioning.
Police Statement and Ongoing Verification
"We are verifying their antecedents to determine whether they have been involved in similar crimes in other locations or if their activities were confined to Bengaluru," said DCP Hakay. This verification process is essential to understand the full extent of the gang's operations and potential links to other criminal networks across India.
Location of Thefts and Additional Incidents
Police investigations revealed that most thefts occurred inside the stadium near gates 1, 2, and 3, as well as at stand P3. Additional incidents were reported near the Cubbon Park Metro station as crowds exited after the match, highlighting the gang's strategic targeting of high-traffic areas during peak times.
Related Case: Fake IPL Ticket Website Scam
In a related development, city police have registered a suo motu case against miscreants who duped the public of money by pretending to sell online tickets for the IPL match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The case has been filed with the Hulimavu police station. According to a preliminary assessment by DCP (Electronics City) M Narayana, at least six victims have lost approximately Rs 50,000 through a fake website named 'IPL Dhamaka Sale'.
The complaint, registered by constable Ramakrishna from the cybercrime wing, stated, "On Saturday, while surfing Facebook, I came across a link announcing ticket sales for Sunday's IPL match. The original website run by the authorities had clearly mentioned that all tickets were sold out. The fake website is duping victims of money with false promises of IPL tickets." This case underscores the broader challenges of cybercrime and fraud associated with major sporting events, prompting heightened vigilance from law enforcement agencies.
