Bengaluru Police Launch Major Crackdown on Public Smoking Violations
In a decisive move to enforce public health regulations, the Northeast division police in Bengaluru conducted an extensive special enforcement drive targeting smoking in public places. The operation resulted in hundreds of violators being booked under the stringent Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA).
Widespread Operation Across Multiple Jurisdictions
The comprehensive enforcement action spanned all 13 police station limits within the division, covering areas including Yelahanka, Kodigehalli, Vidyaranyapura, Sampigehalli, Amruthahally, Kothanur, Bagaluru, Chikkajala, and Devanahalli. The drive commenced on the evening of March 6 and continued through late night into the early hours of March 7, demonstrating the police department's commitment to sustained enforcement.
Surprise Inspections at Key Public Locations
Police teams conducted unannounced inspections at numerous public venues where smoking violations frequently occur. These locations included:
- Areas near educational institutions where students congregate
- Temple premises and surrounding zones
- Shops selling tobacco products
- Hotel entrances and public spaces
During these inspections, authorities also targeted establishments that had illegally displayed cigarette and beedi advertisements at their entrances, a clear violation of COTPA provisions that restrict tobacco advertising in public spaces.
Substantial Enforcement Results and Legal Actions
The enforcement drive yielded significant results, with police registering 40 separate cases at respective police stations. Additionally, authorities imposed fines on 295 individuals caught violating anti-smoking regulations in public areas. This dual approach of case registration and financial penalties underscores the seriousness with which authorities are treating public smoking violations.
