Bengaluru: In a swift operation, the Amruthahalli police prevented a Nepalese couple from fleeing the city with Rs 25 lakh allegedly stolen from their employer's residence, recovering the entire amount before it could disappear.
Accused Identified
The accused, identified as Bhuvan Bista alias Pavan Bista, 35, and his wife Seetha Bista, 33, had been working as a security guard and domestic helper at a contractor's home in Arkavathi Layout. According to the complaint filed by homeowner CH Subbareddy, the cash had been withdrawn from a bank to pay construction workers and was stored in a cupboard.
The Theft
On May 27, the couple allegedly took advantage of the family's absence, located the key hidden elsewhere in the house, and escaped with the cash. When Subbareddy returned home, he found their room abandoned and both their phones switched off. A theft case was immediately registered.
Police Response
What followed was a rapid police response. Led by inspector Balaji V, the team tracked the accused to a relative's residence in Shirke Layout, Kengeri Satellite Town within a day of the complaint. According to senior officers, their arrest on May 28 effectively blocked their escape plan. During interrogation, the couple allegedly confessed that they intended to use the stolen money to fund a luxurious lifestyle in Nepal. They have been remanded to judicial custody.
Police Advisory
A senior police officer said, "We keep advising people to get police verification of employees done, collect their identity proofs and details of family along with mobile numbers. Hire them through authorised agencies instead of engaging people randomly referred by acquaintances or former employees. Always ensure they have limited access to the house and do not let them know where cash and ornaments are kept."
This incident serves as a stark reminder for homeowners to exercise caution when hiring domestic help and to follow safety protocols to prevent such thefts.
