A sacred festival meant for peace and prayers turned into a scene of horror in Bengaluru when a seemingly trivial argument over cooking meat during Chhath Puja celebrations escalated into a deadly confrontation between two co-workers.
The Fatal Argument
According to Bengaluru police authorities, the incident occurred at a construction labourers' quarters in Sunkadakatte, West Bengaluru. What began as a routine day of Chhath Puja observances quickly descended into violence when 28-year-old Rajesh Kumar objected to his co-worker, Santosh Kumar, cooking meat during the religious festival.
Religious Sensitivities Turn Violent
Chhath Puja, a significant Hindu festival dedicated to the Sun God, involves strict vegetarian practices and fasting. The religious clash occurred when Santosh, a migrant worker from Uttar Pradesh, decided to prepare non-vegetarian food despite the ongoing festival observances.
"The argument started over something that could have been resolved peacefully," investigating officers revealed. "But tempers flared, and within moments, the situation turned violent beyond control."
The Deadly Outcome
Police reports indicate that Rajesh Kumar, in a fit of rage, grabbed a sharp weapon and stabbed Santosh multiple times. The attack proved fatal, with Santosh succumbing to his injuries before medical help could arrive.
Local residents and fellow construction workers watched in horror as the festive atmosphere transformed into a crime scene. Bengaluru police immediately launched an investigation and have since apprehended the accused.
Community in Shock
The incident has sent shockwaves through the local migrant worker community in Bengaluru. Many expressed disbelief that a religious disagreement could lead to such extreme violence between co-workers who had previously lived and worked together peacefully.
"This is a tragic reminder of how quickly tensions can escalate," a community leader stated. "Both workers were far from their home states, trying to make a living in the city, and now one is dead and the other faces serious charges."
