Major Heist in Berhampur: Businessman's House Looted of Valuables Worth Over Rs 1 Crore
In a brazen early morning robbery, unidentified miscreants targeted the residence of a businessman in Berhampur, making off with valuables estimated to be worth more than Rs 1 crore. The incident unfolded at Prem Nagar, located within the jurisdiction of the Bada Bazar police station, on Wednesday morning, sending shockwaves through the local community.
Timing of the Theft Exploits Morning Routine
According to police reports, the theft was meticulously timed to coincide with the homeowner's daily routine. The businessman, who was staying alone at the time, had left his house for a morning walk at approximately 4:45 am. This provided the perpetrators with a clear window of opportunity to execute their plan without immediate detection.
The miscreants gained entry by forcibly breaking the lock on the main entrance door. Once inside, they systematically targeted three almirahs situated on both the ground and first floors of the property. The loot included a substantial quantity of gold ornaments, weighing around 1 kilogram, alongside Rs 1.20 lakh in cash.
Discovery and Immediate Police Response
The homeowner, identified as E Raja Prabhakar Rao, returned from his walk around 10:30 am to a disturbing sight. He noticed that the original lock he had used to secure the main door was missing, replaced instead by a smaller, unfamiliar lock. Upon entering, he was confronted with the aftermath of the robbery: broken almirah locks and the absence of his valuable possessions.
Rao promptly alerted the authorities, triggering an immediate police response. A team of officers, accompanied by a dog squad, was swiftly dispatched to the scene to commence inquiries, stated Saravana Vivek M, the Superintendent of Police (Berhampur). The investigation has been prioritized, with a special team constituted to delve into the specifics of the case and pursue leads.
Investigation Challenges and Community Measures
Initial findings have presented certain challenges for the investigative team. Notably, the targeted house was not equipped with CCTV cameras, limiting direct visual evidence of the perpetrators. However, police have seized footage from a CCTV unit installed approximately 50 feet away from the residence, which is currently under verification for any potential clues.
Authorities suspect that local miscreants may be involved in the incident, given the apparent familiarity with the homeowner's schedule and the property's layout. In response, patrolling has been intensified in the surrounding areas as part of efforts to apprehend the culprits and prevent similar occurrences.
This high-value theft underscores concerns about security in residential areas, particularly for individuals living alone. The police are urging residents to enhance their security measures, including the installation of surveillance systems and robust locking mechanisms, to deter such criminal activities.
