In a significant crackdown, Bhopal police have apprehended a five-member gang specialized in stealing crucial 5G network equipment from mobile towers across the city. The thieves targeted high-value Base Band Units (BBUs), causing substantial losses to telecom infrastructure.
How the Elaborate 5G Router Theft Was Uncovered
The case came to light when Premchand Patel, a technician with a private telecom company, filed a formal complaint. On June 14, Patel received an alarm alert from a mobile tower situated near the Samardha cremation ground. Upon rushing to the site, he discovered that a critical piece of electronic equipment—a Base Band Unit (Model 5216)—had been forcibly removed from the tower's secure cabinet.
To solve this sophisticated crime, the police launched a multi-pronged investigation. Authorities meticulously analyzed CCTV footage from the vicinity and studied detailed tower location data. Crucially, the affected telecom company cooperated by providing data related to mobile phones that were active in the area during the suspected time of the theft. This digital trail ultimately led investigators to the suspects.
The Shocking Economics of the 5G Equipment Theft Racket
During interrogation, the arrested gang members confessed to carrying out seven such thefts so far. Police recovered four stolen BBUs from the accused. The investigation revealed a startling market disparity. Each Base Band Unit, a vital component for 5G connectivity, has an approximate market value of Rs 3.5 lakh to Rs 4 lakh.
However, in a baffling twist, the gang did not sell these sophisticated devices on the grey market for telecom parts. Instead, they offloaded the high-value units to scrap dealers in Delhi for a paltry Rs 10,000 each. This highlights a major loophole where precious telecom hardware is being treated as mere metal scrap.
Police further disclosed that suppliers allegedly purchased these stolen units from the scrap dealers and then resold them back to telecom companies, creating a vicious cycle of theft and resale. The total estimated value of the recovered equipment stands at a staggering around Rs 50 lakh.
