Bhopal Woman Files Police Complaint Against Fiancé for Rape and Dowry Demands
A 28-year-old woman from Bhopal has lodged a serious police complaint against her fiancé, accusing him of rape under the pretext of marriage and demanding a substantial dowry of Rs 15 lakh. The case has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting ongoing issues of gender-based violence and dowry harassment in India.
Details of the Alleged Crime
According to police reports, the complainant met the accused, a resident of Delhi who presented himself as a businessman, through a matrimonial website. Their families agreed to the union, and the engagement was formally solemnised in 2025. The woman alleges that during a visit to Bhopal, the accused raped her, exploiting the promise of marriage.
Subsequently, the accused claimed to have suffered significant business losses and demanded Rs 15 lakh from the woman. In a distressing turn of events, she arranged Rs 3.88 lakh through a personal loan and transferred the amount to him. She is currently repaying this loan in instalments, adding financial strain to her ordeal.
Escalation of Dowry Demands
Later, the accused allegedly escalated his demands, insisting on an additional Rs 12 lakh, stating that dowry was necessary for the marriage to proceed. When the woman and her family expressed their inability to afford this amount, the accused and his parents reportedly began pressuring them relentlessly over the dowry issue.
Ultimately, the accused and his family refused to proceed with the marriage, leaving the woman in a vulnerable position both emotionally and financially. This sequence of events has led to the filing of charges under sections related to rape and dowry harassment against the man and his parents.
Police Action and Legal Proceedings
The Bhopal police have registered a case based on the woman's complaint, booking the accused and his parents under relevant legal provisions. Authorities are investigating the matter thoroughly to gather evidence and ensure justice is served. This incident underscores the critical need for stringent enforcement of laws against dowry and sexual violence.
Community leaders and activists have called for increased awareness and support for victims of such crimes, urging society to stand against practices that exploit and harm individuals. The case serves as a stark reminder of the challenges many face in the pursuit of marriage and security.
