Bhubaneswar: The city police on Tuesday apprehended a man on charges of stealing cash and jewellery from the residence of senior IAS officer Bishnupada Sethi, which occurred on May 1. The accused has been identified as Rabindra Naik (35), also known as Gobara, a resident of the Kedarpalli slum in Bhubaneswar.
According to an officer from the Capital police station, the arrest was made following a thorough investigation and analysis of CCTV footage, which revealed Naik's involvement in the crime. The officer described Naik as a habitual burglar, noting that he had previously been arrested in two theft cases under the Lingaraj police station area and one in the Airfield area.
The incident took place in the early hours of May 1, when Naik scaled the rear boundary wall of Sethi's official quarters, located in the upscale Forest Park locality, directly opposite the residence of Police Commissioner S Dev Datta Singh. He made off with a diamond ring and cash.
Vaishali, the wife of IAS officer Sethi, lodged a complaint at the Capital police station, stating that the theft occurred between 12:30 am and 9:00 am. The First Information Report (FIR) detailed the theft of a handbag containing cash, two gold earrings, and a diamond ring. However, police have so far recovered only a few hundred rupees from Naik.
