In response to a concerning series of digital-arrest scams specifically targeting affluent elderly residents in the Salt Lake and New Town areas, the Bidhannagar City Police has announced a comprehensive overhaul of its cybercrime awareness strategy. The new initiative involves conducting repeated and systematic outreach sessions within housing complexes to ensure that every single household receives critical information and education.

Systematic Mapping and Repeated Engagement

Under the revamped approach, police officers will meticulously map residential towers and neighborhood pockets across Salt Lake and New Town. Instead of the previous model, which was limited to just one or two awareness programs per complex annually, the new strategy mandates holding multiple awareness meetings at each location over a concentrated period of a couple of months. This ensures repeated contact and reinforcement of the safety message directly within the communities most at risk.

"We realized that a single annual event is simply insufficient," explained a senior police officer involved in the planning. "These scammers are employing increasingly sophisticated tactics. It is absolutely crucial that awareness is not just delivered once, but reiterated and reinforced consistently." The officer emphasized that the focus will remain squarely on high-value digital arrest and impersonation scams, which have seen a disturbing uptick.

Addressing a Growing Threat

The urgency of this new campaign is underscored by the alarming statistics. Since the beginning of the current year, there have been at least six confirmed cases of digital-arrest scams in these areas alone, with individual victims suffering financial losses ranging from a significant Rs 5 lakh to a staggering Rs 3.3 crore. The scams typically involve fraudsters impersonating officials from agencies like the CBI, Supreme Court, or police cybercrime units.

During the interactive briefings, police teams will educate residents on the exact modus operandi of these frauds. They will teach attendees to identify red flags, such as unsolicited calls alleging legal trouble, and stress a fundamental rule: no legitimate government authority conducts arrests, investigations, or demands funds for verification or bail over a video call. This is a hallmark of the scam.

Focus on Vulnerable Demographics

Police analysis indicates that the primary victims are senior citizens, often those living alone or with limited digital literacy. This demographic is particularly susceptible to the psychological pressure tactics employed by the scammers, which include threats of immediate arrest, presentation of fake documents bearing official-looking seals, and instructions to remain isolated and on a continuous video call.

"In our earlier awareness initiatives, attendance was disappointingly low, often limited to Resident Welfare Association office-bearers and their immediate circles," the officer noted. "By holding multiple, mandatory campaigns, we aim to reach a much broader audience, ultimately empowering more residents to safeguard themselves." This sentiment was echoed by the secretary of a high-rise complex in New Town, who expressed hope that increased police presence and education would significantly enhance community safety.

Leadership and Implementation

Sources reveal that the fresh, proactive strategy is the brainchild of the new Commissioner of Bidhannagar City Police, Murlidhar Sharma. Commissioner Sharma previously conducted a similar, successful community-focused campaign in Baranagar during his earlier tenure as the police chief of the Barrackpore Commissionerate.

The implementation plan is now in motion. Police teams are scheduled to visit large residential complexes multiple times over a two-month cycle. These sessions will not only feature detailed briefings but also include the distribution of printed safety guidelines and dedicated time for officers to address the specific queries and concerns of residents. The goal is to build a resilient, informed community that can act as the first line of defense against these evolving cyber threats.
