17-Year-Old Bihar Student Lured to Patna, Allegedly Raped Under Pocso Act
In a distressing incident from Bihar, a 17-year-old girl from Sheikhpura district was allegedly raped by a man in Patna, as confirmed by police reports on Saturday. The accused, aged 35, was arrested on Friday evening and has been remanded to Sheikhpura district jail following the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.
Details of the Alleged Crime
According to police authorities, the victim, who is a Class 12 student, was allegedly lured to Patna on April 13 under the false pretext of visiting the Patna Zoo and experiencing a ride on the Patna Metro. During the nights of April 13 and 14, she was reportedly sexually assaulted at an undisclosed location. After the assault, the accused abandoned her and fled the scene, leaving the girl in a state of distress.
The traumatized victim managed to contact her parents, who immediately traveled to Patna, traced her whereabouts, and brought her back home to Sheikhpura. In her statement to the police, the girl indicated that she was unfamiliar with the exact location where the assault occurred, complicating initial investigations.
Police Investigation and Accused's Background
Women police station in-charge Rishu Kumari provided updates on the case, stating, "The victim has undergone a medical examination, and we are currently awaiting the forensic report. Police are diligently investigating all aspects of this case to ensure justice is served." She further revealed that police records show the accused, a native of Nalanda district, has a prior criminal history, having been previously jailed in a liquor smuggling case.
Kumari added that the arrested man, originally from a village under the Giriyak police station area in Nalanda district, used to reside in a rented house close to the victim's residence in Sheikhpura. This proximity may have facilitated the alleged crime, and police are exploring this angle as part of their ongoing probe.
Legal and Social Implications
The case has been registered under the Pocso Act, which is designed to protect minors from sexual offenses and ensure swift legal action. Authorities are emphasizing the importance of community vigilance and parental awareness to prevent such incidents, especially involving vulnerable teenagers. The arrest and remand of the accused highlight the seriousness with which law enforcement is treating this matter, aiming to send a strong message against such crimes in the region.
As the investigation progresses, police are urging anyone with additional information to come forward to aid in the case. The victim's family is receiving support, and efforts are being made to ensure her well-being during this challenging time.
