Biker Dies in Kollam After Crash into Unprotected Highway Pit

Tragic Accident Claims Life of Biker on National Highway in Kollam

A 50-year-old biker tragically lost his life after falling into a deep, waterlogged pit that was dug for drain construction along National Highway 66 in Ochira, Kollam. The incident has raised serious concerns about road safety and construction site protocols in the region.

Details of the Fatal Incident

The deceased has been identified as Aji, aged 50, a resident of Memana South and son of Kandallur Bhaskaran Achari. According to police reports, the accident occurred around 11 am when local residents noticed Aji lying dead in the pit at Skylab Junction in Ochira. The pit was part of ongoing development works for NH 66, specifically for drainage construction.

Upon receiving alerts from the community, police officers rushed to the scene. With assistance from residents, they recovered the body from the water-filled excavation. Subsequently, a road barricade and Aji's motorcycle were also retrieved from the pit, indicating the severity of the crash.

Police Investigation and Initial Findings

Officers from the Ochira police station have registered a case of unnatural death and launched a thorough investigation. Preliminary suspicions suggest that the victim might have lost control of his vehicle, leading to the fatal plunge into the unprotected pit. The body has been transferred to Parippally Medical College Hospital for a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

Community Outcry Over Safety Lapses

In the wake of this tragedy, local residents have voiced strong allegations, claiming that the accident resulted from a complete absence of safety arrangements at the construction site. They reported that the pit had been left open without essential safety measures such as barricades or warning lights, posing a significant hazard to motorists.

This incident echoes a similar fatal accident last month in Thodupuzha, where a 27-year-old biker died after falling into a roadside pit dug for culvert construction. That case prompted intervention from the high court, which sought detailed reports on the accident and actions against responsible officers.

The recurring nature of such accidents underscores urgent calls for stricter enforcement of safety standards in highway construction projects across Kerala.
