The cybercrime wing of Chennai police on Thursday arrested political commentator Tiruchi Surya Siva, 33, son of DMK MP Tiruchi Siva, based on a complaint lodged by bike racer and BJP sports and skill development cell state secretary Alisha Abdullah for making derogatory remarks aimed at her. Police said efforts are under way to trace YouTuber Mukthar, another participant in the discussion where the remarks were made.
Complaint and Investigation
Alisha submitted a complaint to the Chennai city commissioner of police on Wednesday seeking action against Surya Siva and Mukthar for making obscene and derogatory remarks during a YouTube channel discussion. She said the comments questioned her personal life, tarnished her reputation, and included offensive remarks about her newborn twin children. She added that the remarks caused mental distress and humiliation to her and her family. Based on the complaint, police registered a case and launched an investigation.
Background of the Case
The arrest follows a formal complaint by Alisha Abdullah, a prominent figure in BJP's sports wing. The remarks were made during a live discussion on a YouTube channel, which police are now scrutinizing. Authorities are also tracing Mukthar, who allegedly participated in the same discussion. The cybercrime wing is handling the case, focusing on the digital evidence of the alleged derogatory statements.
This incident highlights the growing concerns over online harassment and the legal repercussions for offensive speech. The police have urged the public to report any such incidents to ensure a safer digital environment.
