BRO Intensifies Snow Clearance Efforts in Jammu Region Following Heavy Snowfall
In response to significant snowfall that has severely disrupted traffic movement across parts of the Jammu region, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has escalated its snow clearance operations on critical routes, including the Mughal Road and the Basohli-Bhaderwah road. Officials confirmed these intensified efforts on Thursday, March 20, 2026, as the area grapples with adverse weather conditions.
Mughal Road Closure and Clearance Operations
Heavy snowfall on Tuesday led to the closure of Mughal Road, a vital artery connecting the border districts of Poonch and Rajouri in Jammu with Shopian in south Kashmir, for all vehicular traffic. The BRO's 79 RCC team is now working tirelessly, operating round the clock to swiftly reopen this crucial route. Snow clearance is actively underway in Poonch, where the heavy snowfall has caused major connectivity issues, isolating communities and hindering transportation.
Progress has been reported, with the BRO's 52 RCC successfully clearing the road from Hirpora to Peer Ki Gali. However, additional snowfall on Thursday night has complicated the operation, making conditions more challenging for the clearance teams. In a related incident, the BRO's Border Roads Task Force, under Project 'Sampark', executed a recovery operation to rescue an SUV that was trapped in deep snow on Mughal Road, showcasing their commitment to safety and efficiency.
Basohli-Bhaderwah Road and Other Affected Areas
Similarly, traffic movement on the Basohli-Bhaderwah road has been disrupted due to heavy snow, prompting the BRO to intensify clearance operations here as well. Fresh snowfall on Thursday has exacerbated the situation, requiring additional resources and manpower to restore normalcy.
In Doda district, the area has remained cut off from Kathua for the past two days because of the heavy snow. Authorities have deployed extra men and machinery to address this isolation and restore traffic flow as quickly as possible.
Landslide Clearance on Reasi-Mahore Road
Beyond snow-related issues, the BRO is also tackling multiple landslides on the Reasi-Mahore road in Reasi district. Landslides have occurred at Chassana, Malai Nullah, and Kansauli, with a major operation currently focused on clearing a massive landslide at Malai Nullah. Efforts are ongoing to clear these obstructions and ensure the route is safe for travel, highlighting the multifaceted challenges faced by road maintenance teams in the region.
These operations underscore the BRO's critical role in maintaining connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, especially during harsh winter conditions that frequently lead to road closures and traffic disruptions.
