Son of Former BRS MLA Surrenders in Fatal Hit-and-Run Case After Dubai Stay
Mohammed Raheel Aamir, the 22-year-old son of former Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLA Mohammed Shakeel, has surrendered before the Jubilee Hills police in Hyderabad. This development comes in connection with a tragic 2022 hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of an infant. Raheel, who had been residing in Dubai since 2023, returned to Hyderabad three days prior to his surrender and presented himself before investigating officers on Friday, as directed by the high court.
Court-Directed Surrender and Investigation Process
Acting on explicit instructions from the high court, police authorities questioned Raheel Aamir extensively over two days—Friday and Saturday. Following the interrogation, he was released on a personal bond, in strict compliance with judicial directives. Jubilee Hills inspector U Srinivasulu Reddy confirmed the details of the questioning and the subsequent release. The police issued an official notice to Raheel and granted station bail upon his submission of a personal bond. He has been explicitly instructed to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation into the matter.
Details of the 2022 Jubilee Hills Accident
The case originates from a devastating incident on March 17, 2022, on Road No. 45 in Jubilee Hills. An SUV, allegedly driven by Raheel Aamir, struck Kajal, a balloon seller, causing severe injuries. Tragically, her two-and-a-half-month-old son was thrown onto the road upon impact and succumbed to his injuries. Police reports indicate that Raheel fled the scene immediately after the accident, along with his two friends in the vehicle—Syed Afnan Ahmed, a BBA student, and Mohanned Maaz Moheet Khan. The trio abandoned the SUV at the location.
Investigation Developments and Charge Upgrades
Initially, police booked Afnan after he claimed responsibility for driving at the time of the accident. However, the case saw significant developments in December 2023 following a separate incident where a BMW, allegedly driven by Raheel, crashed into a barricade near Praja Bhavan. During this investigation, authorities discovered that Raheel had allegedly attempted to make another individual take responsibility. CCTV footage later identified him as the driver, leading to a new case registration and the suspension of the Punjagutta inspector for dereliction of duty.
This revelation prompted the West Zone police to reopen the 2022 Jubilee Hills fatal accident case. Although a chargesheet had already been filed against Afnan, investigators sought court permission for further inquiry. Upon re-examination, both Afnan and Maaz allegedly stated that Raheel was driving the SUV during the crash. Investigators also obtained WhatsApp conversations among the three, which reportedly indicated Raheel was behind the wheel. Maaz's statement was recorded before a magistrate under Section 164 of the CrPC.
Legal Proceedings and International Dimensions
In 2024, Raheel was formally named as an accused in the case. With court permission, police altered the charge from Section 304-A (causing death by negligence) to Section 304 (Part II) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder). This upgrade was based on allegations that Raheel was using a mobile phone at the time of the accident. By this point, Raheel had relocated to Dubai, prompting authorities to issue a lookout circular to monitor his movements.
On March 25, the high court granted Raheel anticipatory bail and directed him to surrender before the Jubilee Hills police on or before April 19. His recent surrender marks a critical step in the judicial process, as the investigation continues to unfold under court supervision.
