A BTech final-year student died by suicide in the Bijnor area under Sarojini Nagar police limits on April 26. Her father has alleged that she was facing harassment, prompting the police to lodge an FIR against a software engineer on Thursday.
FIR lodged for abetment of suicide
The FIR was registered under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to abetment of suicide.
Background of the incident
The student, a native of Raunahi in Ayodhya, had been living on rent in Seema City for the past seven years. According to her father, a software engineer identified as Udit Mishra, who worked in a private company, was in contact with her and allegedly subjected her to mental and physical harassment.
The father alleged that he received information about his daughter's death on April 26. Upon reaching her room, he found her dead. Initially, the accused and local police informed the family that the student died by hanging herself.
Police investigation
During police questioning, the software engineer stated that he tried calling the student multiple times. When she did not respond, he went to her residence, found the door locked from inside, and upon pushing it open, discovered her hanging from a ceiling hook with a dupatta.
Inspector Kapil Gautam said, "The victim's father has demanded strict action against the accused and a thorough investigation, including examination of call records, chats, CCTV footage and other evidence."
The police are currently investigating the case and collecting evidence to ascertain the circumstances leading to the suicide.
