Bulandshahr Engagement Ceremony Turns Tragic as Stray Bullet Critically Injures 13-Year-Old Boy
In a distressing incident that underscores the perils of celebratory gunfire, a 13-year-old boy was critically injured after being struck in the head by a stray bullet during an engagement ceremony in the Gulaothi area of Bulandshahr city. Police authorities confirmed the event, noting that this marks the second such alarming occurrence in the city within a span of just 20 days.
Details of the Incident
The tragic episode unfolded on Tuesday evening when Mohd Kaif, a resident of Gulaothi, arrived at the function with his elder brother to play the dhol, a traditional drum. According to police reports, a man allegedly opened fire into the air as part of the celebrations, and a stray bullet struck Kaif in the head, causing severe injuries.
SSP Dinesh Kumar Singh provided details on the aftermath, stating that Kaif was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for initial treatment. Due to the gravity of his condition, he was later referred to a specialized medical centre in Meerut for advanced care. "The minor suffered a head injury and is currently under observation in the intensive care unit," Singh explained, emphasizing the critical nature of the situation.
Police Action and Investigation
In response to the incident, law enforcement has taken swift action. An FIR has been registered under section 109, which pertains to attempt to murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), against advocate Paritosh Teotia and his son Harsh Teotia, who are alleged to have fired the shot. SSP Singh added, "An investigation is underway, and police teams have been constituted to arrest the accused individuals."
Relatives of the victim shared that Kaif is the youngest of three siblings and was learning to play the dhol alongside his brother. Shoaib Mewati, a relative, highlighted the family's modest background, noting, "His father works as a daily wager, while one brother is a mechanic and another plays the dhol." This context adds a layer of poignancy to the incident, as the family now faces immense emotional and financial strain.
A Pattern of Similar Incidents
This event follows a strikingly similar case that occurred on February 19, when an eight-year-old boy, Reyansh Verma, sustained a head injury after a 14-year-old boy allegedly opened fire during a marriage ceremony in the Sarraf Bazar area of Bulandshahr. Reyansh underwent major surgery at a private hospital in Noida, with his family incurring treatment costs of nearly Rs 30 lakh.
SP City Shankar Prasad provided an update on that case, stating, "The child remained on a ventilator for 15 days and continues to face complications, requiring further surgery." In that instance, authorities arrested a man named Robin Verma and his minor son, seizing the firearm and cancelling its license. Verma was sent to jail, while his son was placed in a juvenile correction home.
Broader Implications and Concerns
The recurrence of such incidents within a short timeframe raises serious concerns about public safety and the enforcement of laws against celebratory firing. These events not only result in life-threatening injuries but also impose significant financial burdens on affected families, as seen in both cases.
Police officials have reiterated their commitment to cracking down on such reckless behavior, urging the public to refrain from using firearms during celebrations. The ongoing investigations aim to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent future tragedies, highlighting the need for stricter gun control measures and community awareness.
As the community grapples with these back-to-back incidents, the focus remains on the recovery of the young victims and the pursuit of accountability to ensure such avoidable accidents do not recur.
