Pune: A burglary at a housing society on Sinhagad Road came to light on Sunday after thieves stole gold and silver ornaments and cash worth Rs 24.35 lakh from a locked flat. The flat owner, a 51-year-old homemaker, lodged a complaint with Parvati police.
Police said the woman lived in the second-floor flat with her husband, who works for a private insurance company, and their son, an employee of a private firm. The family had left Pune early on Friday to visit temples in Dharashiv and Solapur districts.
They locked the flat before leaving. On returning on Sunday morning, they found the main door lock broken, an investigating officer said.
Police said the burglars entered the flat and broke open cupboards in the living room and bedroom. Jewellery kept inside was stolen along with cash of Rs 6.86 lakh. The total value of the stolen property is estimated at Rs 24.35 lakh, the officer said.
A case has been registered against unidentified persons. Police are analysing CCTV footage from the society and nearby establishments to trace the suspects and establish how they gained entry.
The society has a watchman, but he did not report noticing anything suspicious, the officer said.
