A tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday at the Tirupur bus stand, where a 23-year-old bus conductor lost his life after being crushed under the wheels of a private minibus. The deceased has been identified as Surya, who was a temporary conductor with the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC).
Background of the Victim
Surya had previously worked as a conductor for a private bus service before securing a temporary position with TNSTC. Sources indicate he was scheduled to begin his shift on the Thoravalur route at 4 am. To ensure punctuality, he arrived at the bus stand early and noticed a minibus belonging to his former private employer parked at the stand.
Sequence of Events
Deciding to rest before his shift, Surya spread a cloth on the ground directly in front of the stationary vehicle and fell asleep. Around 3:30 am, the driver of the private minibus arrived to move the vehicle to the passenger boarding area. Unaware that Surya was sleeping in the vehicle's path, the driver moved the bus forward. The heavy wheels ran over Surya, causing fatal injuries, and he died on the spot.
Police Investigation
Upon receiving the alert, Tirupur South police arrived at the scene and sent the body for postmortem. A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances of the mishap and whether any negligence was involved.
This incident highlights the risks faced by workers in the transport sector and the need for safety measures at bus stands.
