Prominent Businessman Gunned Down in Purnia District, Social Media Dispute Emerges as Key Motive

In a shocking incident that has sent ripples through the community, unidentified criminals brutally shot and killed a well-known businessman near Neva Lal Chowk in the Maranga police station area of Purnia district on Tuesday. The victim has been identified as Suraj Bihari, also known as Suraj Yadav, who owned the largest corn (maize) warehouse in the city and maintained an active social media presence.

Details of the Fatal Attack

According to police reports and statements from family members, Suraj Bihari was accompanied by his private armed guard, Prem Kumar, and a cousin when the attack occurred. The assailants struck as soon as he stepped out of his car, firing five rounds at close range. Three bullets hit his back and arm, causing immediate fatal injuries and leading to his death on the spot.

When the guard and cousin rushed to his aid, the attackers fired two more shots at them. Fortunately, both managed to escape unharmed, though the brazen nature of the assault has raised serious concerns about law and order in the area.

Police Investigation and Official Statements

Upon receiving information about the incident, Superintendent of Police (SP) Sweety Sehrawat, along with other senior officials and the Maranga police team, rushed to the crime scene to initiate a thorough investigation. The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team was called to collect evidence, and CCTV footage from the vicinity is being meticulously examined to identify the perpetrators.

SP Sweety Sehrawat confirmed that the victim succumbed to gunshot injuries. "He was taken to a hospital for treatment, where doctors declared him dead. His postmortem was conducted at the GMCH. The accused have been identified, and three special teams have been formed to arrest them," she stated.

Emerging Motive: Social Media Dispute Over Girl's Photo

During the preliminary investigation, police have uncovered that the murder may be linked to a dispute over sharing a girl's photo on social media. "During the investigation so far, it has come to light that the incident occurred due to a dispute over sharing a girl's photo on social media. An investigation is being conducted on this point as well, and we are also probing other possible reasons for the dispute," the SP elaborated.

This revelation highlights how online conflicts can escalate into real-world violence, raising questions about digital behavior and its consequences.

Family Allegations and Background of the Accused

The family of the deceased has accused two brothers—Brajesh Singh and Nandu Singh, residents of Neva Lal Chowk—of carrying out the murder. The brothers are allegedly involved in running a smack (heroin) smuggling gang and have been absconding since the incident.

The dispute reportedly originated during Saraswati Puja, when an altercation occurred between the accused and Suraj's younger brother, Uday Yadav, along with his friends, over the creation of a reel. Although the matter was temporarily resolved, tensions flared again on Tuesday morning when the brothers and their associates allegedly surrounded and assaulted Uday and his friend.

Political Reaction and Allegations of Police Protection

Purnia MP Rajesh Ranjan, popularly known as Pappu Yadav, visited the hospital shortly after the incident and made serious allegations. He claimed that the accused brothers enjoy police protection, adding a political dimension to the case and calling for accountability in law enforcement.

Suraj Bihari was known for his active engagement on social media platforms, where he frequently posted reels. A recent post from January 12 featured his newly purchased luxury car, showcasing his success and lifestyle. His murder has not only devastated his family but also sparked discussions about safety and the impact of social media conflicts in modern society.
