The Department of Prisons and Correctional Services in Buxar is progressing with an innovative initiative to establish a fuel station within the premises of Buxar Central Jail. Officials from two major oil marketing companies, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), recently conducted inspections of the proposed site, with HPCL granting formal approval for the project.
Site Selection and Commercial Viability
The identified location for the fuel station is situated in the outer area of the jail campus, which spans nearly 80 acres and includes an Open Jail facility along with a large vacant stretch on its southern side. Positioned along a main road, the site has been deemed highly suitable for commercial use, making it an ideal choice for this venture. The strategic placement is expected to attract customers from the surrounding areas, enhancing the station's potential for success.
Employment Opportunities for Inmates
According to sources familiar with the plan, inmates from the Open Jail will be responsible for operating the fuel station. Currently, many inmates travel daily to Buxar town in search of work but often return without employment, leading to unstable and insufficient income. The proposed outlet is projected to provide steady jobs and fair wages to approximately 18 inmates initially, with possibilities for expansion as the business grows. This initiative is part of broader efforts to rehabilitate prisoners through meaningful work and skill development.
Related Rehabilitation Efforts
In a related development, the department has recently launched a "Mukti Outlet" in Buxar, which sells products crafted by inmates, such as spices, soaps, and other items. This outlet complements the fuel station project by offering additional avenues for inmate employment and product sales. Historically, Buxar Central Jail was renowned for manufacturing execution ropes, highlighting its long-standing involvement in prison industries.

Jail Superintendent Gyanita Gaurav confirmed that preparations for setting up the fuel station are underway, with inspections already completed. However, she noted that the project has not been officially announced yet. "We will share updates following directions from senior officials in Patna," Gaurav stated, indicating that formal procedures are expected to commence soon. The initiative aligns with ongoing prison reform efforts aimed at improving inmate welfare and reducing recidivism through gainful employment.
