Buxar Jail Inmates Transform from Violence to Crafting Herbal Holi Gulal

In a remarkable shift, the hands that once wielded weapons and instilled fear on the streets are now dedicated to creating herbal 'gulal' for the upcoming Holi festival. At Buxar Central Jail, five inmates are actively involved in this positive initiative, producing eco-friendly colors within the prison premises. So far, they have prepared 500 packets of this herbal gulal, marking a significant step in their rehabilitation journey.

From Dreadful Pasts to Hopeful Futures

The backgrounds of these convicts are indeed stark: four are serving life sentences for separate murder cases, while the fifth has been convicted under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Despite their grim histories, jail officials emphasize that their current mission is to spread harmony and positivity in society. This project is part of a broader rehabilitation program designed to engage inmates in productive and creative activities, fostering a sense of responsibility and skill acquisition.

Eco-Friendly and Safe Products

Jail superintendent Gyanita Gaurav highlighted that the herbal gulal is made using natural ingredients, ensuring it is environmentally friendly and safe for the skin. The colors are available in two sizes:

  • A 50-gram packet priced at Rs 25
  • A 100-gram packet costing Rs 45

These products are sold at the Mukti outlet located within the jail premises, which markets various goods prepared by inmates under vocational training programs.

Encouraging Community Response and Future Prospects

Last year, the response from local residents was highly encouraging, and jail authorities are optimistic about a similar reception this year. Such initiatives not only keep inmates meaningfully engaged but also blend the festive spirit of Holi with social reform. They offer inmates a valuable opportunity to rebuild confidence and prepare for reintegration into society after their release. Officials believe that these efforts contribute to spreading happiness and harmony, transforming lives both inside and outside the prison walls.
