Major Drug Bust in Silchar: Police Seize Heroin Worth Rs 2.3 Crore

In a significant crackdown on narcotics trafficking, the Cachar police on Wednesday executed a successful operation resulting in the seizure of heroin valued at approximately Rs 2.3 crore and the arrest of two individuals. The incident occurred near the Ramnagar Bypass on the outskirts of Silchar, Assam, marking a crucial victory in the ongoing battle against drug networks in the region.

Intelligence-Led Interception and Recovery

Acting on precise and specific intelligence inputs, a dedicated police team strategically intercepted an SUV that was traveling from neighboring Mizoram. During a thorough search of the vehicle, officers uncovered 39 soap cases containing a total of 456 grams of heroin. The illicit substance was cleverly concealed inside the vehicle's chassis, highlighting the sophisticated methods employed by traffickers to evade detection.

Arrests and Suspect Profiles

The two men apprehended in connection with the seizure have been identified as Fahim Ahmed Barbhuiya (25) and Hanif Ahmed Laskar (31). Both individuals are residents under the jurisdiction of the Silchar police station. According to Additional SP (Crime) Rajat Kumar Pal, Laskar has a prior history of involvement in similar drug-related offences, raising concerns about his role in broader criminal activities.

Pal emphasized that Laskar will undergo intensive interrogation to establish the forward and backward linkages of the drug network. This step is critical for uncovering the supply chain, identifying key players, and dismantling the entire trafficking operation that spans across state borders.

Investigation and Regional Impact

Police authorities suspect that the heroin consignment was being transported from Mizoram with the intent of distribution in the Barak Valley and potentially beyond. A formal case has been registered, and further investigation is actively underway to trace the origins, destinations, and all individuals involved in this illicit trade.

Officials have reiterated their commitment to an intensified drive against narcotics, aiming to systematically dismantle trafficking networks operating in the region. This bust underscores the persistent efforts of law enforcement to curb the flow of drugs and enhance public safety in Assam and neighboring areas.

The seizure not only represents a financial blow to drug syndicates but also serves as a deterrent, signaling the vigilance and capability of the Cachar police in combating organized crime. As the probe continues, more details are expected to emerge, shedding light on the intricate web of narcotics trafficking in Northeast India.
