KOLKATA: The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to produce all documents, audio recordings, videos, and photographs related to the investigation of the RG Kar rape-murder case. The court stated that it would examine on Thursday whether there is any scope for further investigation in the matter.
Court's Stance on Victim's Parents' Request
A special bench comprising Justices Shampa Sarkar and Tirthankar Ghosh refused immediate permission to the victim's parents to visit the crime spot. The bench asked their counsel to first satisfy the court on the legal grounds for such a request before any decision could be made.
Background of the Case
The special bench was assigned the matter by Chief Justice Sujoy Paul after three High Court benches recused themselves from hearing the case. Justice Sarkar cautioned all parties against making public comments on the matter, emphasizing the need for judicial propriety.
Allegations of Incomplete Investigation
Senior advocate Jayanta Narayan Chatterjee, representing the victim's family, argued that the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was not the only scene of the crime. He pointed out that other areas, including the seventh-floor operation theatre and the chamber of then-principal Sandip Ghosh, had remained open since the first day. Despite repeated requests to the CBI to examine and seal those areas, no action had been taken, he alleged.
The court's directive to produce all evidence is seen as a crucial step in ensuring a thorough and transparent investigation. The next hearing is scheduled for Thursday, when the bench will review the materials submitted by the CBI and determine the need for further probe.
