Canada-Returned Woman Arrested in Shocking Faridkot Murder Case
In a disturbing development from Punjab's Faridkot district, a woman who recently returned from Canada has been arrested for the alleged murder of her husband. The incident occurred at Sukhanwala village late on Friday night, November 28, sending shockwaves through the local community.
Rupinder Kaur, the accused, allegedly conspired with her paramour Harkanwalpreet Singh to kill her husband Gurwinder Singh. While Rupinder has been taken into custody, Harkanwalpreet remains absconding as police intensify their search operations.
Marriage Timeline and Suspicious Behavior
The tragic story began when Gurwinder Singh, who worked at a private bank, married Rupinder Kaur in November 2023. Rupinder had initially migrated to Canada in 2019 and returned briefly for the marriage ceremony before going back to Canada. She eventually returned to India in January 2025 and started living with Gurwinder at their Sukhanwala village home.
The situation took a dramatic turn when Gurwinder's parents migrated to Canada in March 2025, leaving the couple alone in the village. According to the complaint filed by Gurwinder's sister, Manveer Kaur, who is a permanent resident of Canada but currently staying at her in-laws' home in Jodki Kankar village, Fazilka, trouble began brewing in the marriage soon after.
"Gurwinder used to share with me that Rupinder was constantly troubling him on various pretexts for several months," Manveer stated in her police complaint. "He had developed serious suspicions about her character and behavior."
The Fateful Night and Missing Gold
The tragedy unfolded on the night of November 28 when Gurwinder made a crucial phone call to his sister. "He told me he had concrete evidence that Rupinder was having illicit relations with Harkanwalpreet Singh from Bathinda village, who had also returned from Canada," Manveer revealed in her complaint.
Gurwinder expressed fears that his wife and her lover were conspiring to kill him to usurp his property. Tragically, his fears materialized within hours. At approximately 11:30 PM, Manveer received the devastating news that her brother had been killed and his body was discovered on the roof of their Sukhanwala village home.
Adding to the mystery, gold jewelry was reported missing from the household almirah. The family's cousin, Jatinder Singh, who lives nearby, provided crucial information to investigators. He stated that around 11 PM, while he was on a post-dinner walk, he saw an unknown person arriving at Gurwinder's home. Rupinder opened the door for this individual, and shortly afterward, Gurwinder was found dead.
Police Investigation and Ongoing Manhunt
Faridkot DSP Tarlochan Singh confirmed that Rupinder Kaur has been arrested while Harkanwalpreet Singh remains at large. "We are making all possible efforts to arrest the absconding accused," the DSP stated.
In a significant revelation, DSP Singh indicated that preliminary reports suggest Rupinder Kaur might have been deported from Canada. However, he emphasized that this aspect is still under investigation. Similarly, authorities are probing Harkanwalpreet's background and the circumstances of his return from Canada.
The investigation has hit an intriguing hurdle as no visible injury marks were found on Gurwinder's body, leaving the exact cause of death unknown. Forensic experts and medical professionals are working to determine how the murder was committed.
Police have registered a case under Section 103 (murder) and 61(2) BNS (criminal conspiracy) at the Sadar Faridkot police station against both Rupinder Kaur and Harkanwalpreet Singh. The investigation continues as authorities piece together the sequence of events that led to this tragic family drama with international connections.
