CBI Nabs Delhi Police Head Constable in Major Bribery Sting Operation

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has made a significant arrest in New Delhi, apprehending a head constable from the Delhi Police's Anti-Narcotic Cell in Dwarka. The officer stands accused of demanding a substantial bribe of Rs 15 lakh from a woman complainant, according to official statements released on Wednesday.

Red-Handed Capture and Cash Recovery

The accused constable, identified as Ajay, was caught in the act by CBI sleuths during a meticulously planned trap operation. He was arrested while accepting an initial payment of Rs 2 lakh, which represented part of the total bribe amount he had allegedly demanded. Following his detention, the agency conducted thorough searches at his office premises, leading to the startling discovery and seizure of Rs 48.9 lakh in cash.

Complaint Details and Allegations

The CBI registered the formal case on Tuesday based on a detailed complaint filed by the woman victim. She alleged that Head Constable Ajay, along with other unidentified individuals, had threatened to falsely implicate her in a criminal case unless she paid them Rs 15 lakh. According to the complaint, Ajay specifically demanded an upfront payment of Rs 5 lakh by Tuesday, applying pressure on the complainant to comply with his illegal demands.

Investigation and Ongoing Probe

Acting swiftly on the complaint information, the CBI established a trap on the same day and successfully apprehended the head constable during the bribe exchange. Officials have stated that the origin of the recovered Rs 48.9 lakh remains under investigation, with authorities examining potential connections to the alleged bribery scheme. The CBI has emphasized that their investigation continues to identify the roles of other individuals mentioned in the complaint and to uncover the full scope of what appears to be a corruption network.

Pattern of Police Corruption Cases

This incident follows a concerning pattern of similar cases involving Delhi Police personnel. Earlier this February, the CBI arrested an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) stationed at the CR Park police station for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh. In that case, the ASI was accused of seeking Rs 25 lakh to settle a property dispute, with assurances to the complainant that no legal action would be pursued against them.

The repeated occurrence of such bribery allegations against law enforcement officials raises serious questions about systemic corruption within certain police units. The CBI's proactive sting operations demonstrate the agency's commitment to rooting out corruption, even when it involves fellow law enforcement personnel. These cases highlight the ongoing challenges in maintaining integrity within police forces and the importance of robust anti-corruption mechanisms.
