Father Seeks CBI Inquiry After Son's Fatal Holi Lynching in Southwest Delhi
Days after the tragic lynching of 26-year-old Tarun Butolia in southwest Delhi's Uttam Nagar, allegedly stemming from a dispute during Holi celebrations, his father, Memraj, has demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe. On Saturday, Memraj expressed frustration over the lack of communication from authorities regarding the investigation's progress.
Family Alleges Police Opacity, Demands Transparency
Memraj told the media, "Police informed us that five or six individuals have been arrested. However, when we requested to see those detained, they refused. I am calling for a CBI inquiry to ensure a fair and transparent investigation." In response, Delhi Police confirmed the arrest of six suspects, identified as Umardeen (49), Jummadeen (36), Mustaque (46), Kamruddin (36), Muzzafar (25), and Tahir (18).
An officer detailed that three of the arrested—Umardeen, Kamruddin, and Jummadeen—are brothers, while the others are relatives residing nearby in Uttam Nagar. All work as wall painters, similar to Memraj, who is a white wash painter. Police added that the victim's family provided a list of 15-20 potential suspects, with names currently under verification. Notably, charges under the SC/ST Act have been incorporated into the murder FIR.
Incident Details and Community Tensions
Tarun's elder brother, Arun Kumar, recounted that the altercation began after a child accidentally dropped a water balloon on a woman. "The woman escalated the situation, using it as a pretext to initiate a confrontation," he claimed. Police are actively searching for this woman. Kumar further alleged, "While police state arrests have been made, we have not been presented with any concrete evidence. Approximately 20-25 people were involved in the clash."
Following the lynching, the area remained tense on Saturday, with two additional companies of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) deployed to maintain order. Reports indicate that the house of the main accused was vandalized by locals, though a senior officer clarified that it was not set on fire; instead, some vehicles linked to the accused were burnt. Nearly 200 police personnel were initially deployed post-incident, with reinforcements now in place to prevent further unrest.
Political Response and Calls for Justice
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta addressed the incident on social media, stating, "The brutal murder of an innocent youth in Uttam Nagar is profoundly painful, condemnable, and shocking to society. Delhi maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards such heinous criminal acts. The administration has received strict instructions to arrest all perpetrators immediately." She emphasized government support for the victim's family, pledging to ensure they receive all possible assistance and justice.
Minister Ravinder Indraj Singh and MP Kamaljeet Sehrawat visited the family on Saturday, with Singh asserting, "Those who have tarnished a festival of brotherhood like Holi with violence will face severe consequences." Tarun's uncle, Tek Chand, noted that after the family requested a CBI probe, police began providing more regular updates on the investigation, though concerns about transparency persist.
