The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) launched a major operation on Friday, conducting simultaneous searches at multiple locations in Sundargarh district, including mines operated by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL). The raids are part of an ongoing probe into alleged large-scale coal diversion and illegal transportation activities.
Coordinated Search Operation Across Key Sites
According to sources familiar with the investigation, three specialized CBI teams dispatched from Delhi executed coordinated searches at strategic locations. The operation targeted the Garjanbahal and Kulda coal mines under MCL's management, along with the Kanika railway siding situated in the Hemgir block of Sundargarh district.
Questioning of Key Personnel
During the operation, CBI investigators reportedly brought C P Sethi, the current in-charge of the Kanika railway siding, from his residence to the siding premises for detailed questioning. Sources indicate that Sethi had previously served as project in-charge of the Garjanbahal mine, raising suspicions that the alleged diversion may have occurred during his earlier tenure at that location.
Additionally, several employees working at the Garjanbahal mine were also questioned by CBI officials as part of the ongoing investigation. The agency is meticulously examining documents and records related to coal despatch procedures and transportation logistics to establish a clear chain of events.
Scope of Alleged Irregularities
The investigation centers on suspected illegal transportation of thousands of tonnes of coal from MCL mines to railway sidings. Specifically, investigators are examining the alleged diversion of approximately 75,000 tonnes of coal that reportedly went unaccounted for during the despatch process from mine to siding.
Primary objectives of the investigation include:
- Ascertaining the precise methodology used to transport coal through the railway siding
- Identifying the entities or individuals who received the diverted coal consignments
- Establishing the timeline and circumstances surrounding the alleged irregularities
- Determining potential financial losses and regulatory violations
Ongoing Investigation and Documentation Review
CBI officers conducted thorough examinations of documents and records pertaining to coal despatch authorization, transportation manifests, and receiving documentation. The agency is particularly focused on identifying discrepancies between official records and actual coal movements.
Sources indicate that the raids were continuing at the time of reporting, suggesting a comprehensive investigation into what appears to be a significant case of alleged resource diversion. The CBI's involvement underscores the seriousness with which authorities are treating these allegations of irregularities in coal transportation from MCL facilities.
The investigation represents a significant development in efforts to ensure transparency and accountability in India's coal sector, particularly in regions where mining operations form a crucial part of the local economy and energy infrastructure.
