The operation targeted the Garjanbahal and Kulda coal mines under MCL's management, along with the Kanika railway siding situated in the Hemgir block of Sundargarh district.
Questioning of Key Personnel
During the operation, CBI investigators reportedly brought C P Sethi, the current in-charge of the Kanika railway siding, from his residence to the siding premises for detailed questioning. Sources indicate that Sethi had previously served as project in-charge of the Garjanbahal mine, raising suspicions that the alleged diversion may have occurred during his earlier tenure at that location.
Additionally, several employees working at the Garjanbahal mine were also questioned by CBI officials as part of the ongoing investigation. The agency is meticulously examining documents and records related to coal despatch procedures and transportation logistics to establish a clear chain of events.

The investigation centers on suspected illegal transportation of thousands of tonnes of coal from MCL mines to railway sidings.
