Chandigarh Police Recover Stolen Motorcycle After Campus Shooting Incident
In a significant development, the Chandigarh police have successfully recovered a motorcycle that was robbed at gunpoint from a couple near the Sector 38 dumping ground on Wednesday. This recovery comes in the aftermath of a disturbing shooting incident that occurred on the Panjab University (PU) campus, although authorities have yet to make any arrests even after 24 hours have passed since the initial firing.
Details of the Campus Shooting
The sequence of events began on Tuesday evening when four assailants targeted Jashandeep Singh Jawandha, a student leader affiliated with the SOPU party, on the PU campus. According to police reports, the gunmen fired two bullets at Jawandha while he was standing in the parking lot near the university's botany department. Fortunately, both shots missed, and Jawandha managed to escape unharmed. He has not yet provided his official statement to the police regarding the incident.
Investigations reveal that the two gunmen arrived on a scooter around 5:45 PM and approached Jawandha unnoticed. One of them suddenly pulled out a pistol from a bag and fired the shots. After the failed attempt, the assailants fled on their scooter but became disoriented on the university grounds, ending up at the rear of the Radha Krishan temple with no clear exit route.
Escalation to Motorcycle Robbery
In a desperate bid to escape, the suspects abandoned their scooter and attempted to enter the temple, but were stopped by the priest for not removing their shoes. Enraged, they threatened the priest with a gun before leaving. They then proceeded to a nearby private school, where they confronted a couple at gunpoint, forcibly taking their Bullet motorcycle and speeding away. The bike's owner promptly alerted the police control room, which led to the recovery of the vehicle.
Police Response and Investigation
The police response was swift, with Dalbir Singh Bhinder, DSP of the central division, Sector 11 SHO Japal Singh Bhullar, and crime branch officers rushing to the scene alongside forensic teams. Upon reviewing CCTV footage, authorities now suspect there may have been four individuals involved in the incident. The abandoned scooter was seized and found to have fake number plates, adding a layer of complexity to the investigation.
In a formal move, the Sector 11 police have registered two separate First Information Reports (FIRs) related to the case. One FIR was filed based on the statement of Sub-Inspector Neeraj Kumar under the Arms Act, addressing the firing of two bullets on the PU campus. The second FIR was registered on the complaint of Govind from Khuda Lahora village, detailing the robbery of his Bullet motorcycle at gunpoint.
