Major Fire Devastates Shop in Chandigarh's Industrial Area Phase 2
A significant fire erupted in a commercial establishment in Chandigarh's Industrial Area, Phase 2, on Monday morning, resulting in the complete destruction of the premises. The incident occurred at Shop No. 406-A, which housed two partitioned business units—one specializing in crockery and the other dealing in electrical wires.
Fire Department Response and Operations
The Fire and Emergency Services Department received an emergency call around 10:00 AM. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that flames had already engulfed the entire building. They were forced to break open the locks to initiate firefighting operations.
Five fire tenders were deployed from multiple stations including Industrial Area, Sector 32, and Ramdarbar. These vehicles made numerous trips to fetch water and combat the intense blaze. Despite bringing the flames under control within approximately one hour, thick smoke had permeated the shop and surrounding areas, extending the overall operation to nearly five hours. Fire tenders were finally withdrawn around 3:00 PM.
Investigation and Damage Assessment
While the exact cause remains under official investigation, preliminary sources indicate that an electrical short circuit in the wiring is the most likely trigger for the fire. The shop suffered what appears to be a total loss, and a formal damage assessment will be conducted to determine the exact financial impact.
Chandigarh Mayor Saurabh Joshi visited the site to assess the situation firsthand. Since the shop's height is below 15 meters, regulatory notices cannot be issued under standard protocols. However, the fire department has issued safety advisories to similar establishments in the area to prevent future incidents.
Extended Firefighting Efforts
Over two dozen firefighters from various stations participated in the extensive operation, which continued under the supervision of senior Fire and Emergency Services officers until evening. The coordinated effort prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent properties, though the affected shop was completely gutted.
This incident highlights the importance of electrical safety in commercial establishments and the critical role of rapid emergency response in urban areas.
