A portion of the shed on platform 5 of Lucknow's Charbagh railway station collapsed on Friday morning around 8 am, leaving at least two passengers and a train ticket examiner (TTE) injured. The incident occurred while the station is undergoing redevelopment by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA).
Background of the Collapse
According to railway officials, the shed that collapsed had already been marked for removal as part of the ongoing modernization work at the station. Despite this, platform 5 remained open for passenger movement, while the adjacent platform 4 had been closed due to redevelopment activities. The injured passengers, along with others, were waiting for the Howrah-Doon Express (13037) at platform 5 when the incident occurred.
Injuries and Response
Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of Northern Railway's Lucknow division, Samarth Gupta, confirmed that all three injured individuals are stable and safe after receiving prompt medical attention. He added that railway authorities have ordered a probe to determine the exact cause of the collapse and to assess whether safety protocols were adequately followed during the redevelopment process.
Safety Measures and Ongoing Operations
Operations at the station continued with caution as officials inspected nearby structures to rule out further risks. The incident has raised concerns about passenger safety during the redevelopment phase. The railway administration is taking necessary steps to ensure the safety of commuters and workers alike.
