Two Arrested in Chatra for Alleged Role in Contract Killing Over Love Affair
In a significant development in a high-profile murder case, police in Chatra have arrested two individuals on Sunday for their alleged involvement in the contract killing of a 25-year-old man. The victim, identified as Karamjeet Singh, also known as Vikas Kumar, was shot dead on Friday night in a chilling incident that has shocked the local community.
Details of the Arrests and the Accused
The arrested persons have been named as Leela Devi and Rajesh Ghansi. According to police officials, the murder is intricately linked to a love affair and was allegedly executed by hired shooters for a contract sum of Rs 5 lakh. The assailants, believed to be from the Piparwar area, have been identified, and intensive raids are currently underway to apprehend them.
Background of the Tragic Incident
Karamjeet Singh, a resident of Salga village in Hazaribag district, was fatally shot near Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya on Friday evening. He was returning home after attending a court hearing when the attack occurred. Based on a formal complaint lodged by the victim’s father, Sadar police registered a case against five individuals, including the parents of the girl with whom Karamjeet was involved in a relationship.
The Forbidden Love Affair That Sparked the Crime
Police investigations reveal that Karamjeet was in a relationship with a 16-year-old girl from Tandwa. When her family discovered the affair, they promptly arranged her marriage in April 2024. However, just a week later, Karamjeet and the girl eloped to Haridwar. In response, the girl’s family filed a kidnapping case against Karamjeet, leading to his arrest in May.
Alleged Conspiracy and Contract Killing
The situation escalated dramatically when, according to police, the girl’s mother, Leela Devi, allegedly purchased a pistol and cartridges from Rajesh Ghansi for Rs 50,000. She then orchestrated a contract killing, which was reportedly planned for 2026. Sub-divisional police officer Sandeep Suman confirmed the arrests and emphasized that raids are ongoing to capture the remaining accused individuals involved in this heinous crime.
