Tragic Accident Claims Life of 7-Year-Old Boy on Chennai Flyover
A heartbreaking incident unfolded on the Kathipara flyover in Chennai on Thursday evening, resulting in the death of a seven-year-old boy. The child, identified as Devarasan, was riding pillion with his mother on a bicycle when a speeding motorcycle struck them from behind.
Details of the Fatal Collision
The accident occurred as Devarasan and his mother Gomathi were descending the flyover towards Guindy. Gomathi, who works at a petrol bunk on Mount-Poonamallee Road in Parangimalai, had taken her son to work with her since his school was closed for the day. As they made their way home, a motorcycle traveling at high speed approached from behind and collided violently with their bicycle.
The impact of the crash was severe enough to throw both mother and son onto the road, leaving them with serious injuries. Immediate assistance came from passers-by who witnessed the accident and rushed the injured to Guindy Government Hospital for emergency medical attention.
Medical Response and Tragic Outcome
Despite receiving initial treatment at Guindy GH, young Devarasan's condition required specialized care. He was promptly referred to the Institute of Child Health in Egmore for advanced medical intervention. Tragically, the seven-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries during the transfer between hospitals, marking a devastating end to what began as a routine journey home.
Devarasan was a Class II student whose life was cut short in this sudden and violent manner. His mother Gomathi survived the collision but suffered significant injuries in the accident that claimed her son's life.
Police Investigation and Arrest
The St Thomas Mount police have registered a case regarding this fatal accident and have taken swift action in response. The motorcyclist involved in the collision, identified as 29-year-old Saravanan, has been arrested by authorities. The investigation is ongoing as police work to determine the exact circumstances that led to this tragic event on one of Chennai's busy flyovers.
This incident highlights critical concerns about road safety, particularly regarding vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians sharing infrastructure with motorized vehicles. The Kathipara flyover, being a major transportation artery in Chennai, sees significant traffic flow daily, making such accidents particularly alarming for city residents and commuters.
The community mourns the loss of young Devarasan while questions arise about enforcement of traffic regulations and speed limits on such elevated roadways. As the investigation continues, this tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the potentially fatal consequences when vehicles operate at excessive speeds in proximity to more vulnerable forms of transportation.
