Chennai Jewellery Shop Employee Arrested for Stealing Gold Coins and Ornaments

A 32-year-old employee working at a jewellery shop located in the Teynampet area of Chennai has been arrested by the police for allegedly stealing gold coins and ornaments from the store. According to official reports, law enforcement authorities have successfully recovered 103 grams of gold coins from the accused individual.

Internal Inquiry Uncovers Significant Gold Shortage

The case came to light following a formal complaint filed by D'Souza Sagayaraj, who serves as the assistant general manager of the jewellery establishment based in T Nagar. A comprehensive stock verification conducted in February 2026 revealed a concerning shortage of 172 grams of gold coins and various ornaments from the shop's inventory.

An internal inquiry was promptly initiated to investigate the discrepancy. During this process, suspicion gradually fell upon an employee named Sivadev, who held the responsibility of maintaining and managing the jewellery stock at the premises.

Employee Confesses to Theft During Police Questioning

When questioned by authorities, Sivadev confessed to stealing the gold items from the jewellery shop. As part of his admission, he returned cash amounting to 4 lakh rupees along with 41 grams of gold ornaments to the management. He claimed that he would subsequently hand over the remaining 103 grams of gold that was still missing.

However, Sivadev failed to fulfill this promise and continuously delayed the process of returning the outstanding gold. This failure to comply with his commitment prompted further legal action against him.

Police Register Case and Make Swift Arrest

Based on the formal complaint lodged on April 11, the police registered a case and assembled a special team to investigate the matter. The same day, the special police team successfully arrested Sivadev from the Kolathur area of Chennai.

The arrest demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated efforts between business management and law enforcement in addressing internal theft cases within commercial establishments. The recovery of stolen property highlights the importance of thorough investigation procedures in such criminal matters.
