Chennai Man Arrested for Setting Wife on Fire Over Money

A 36-year-old man was arrested on Saturday for allegedly setting his wife on fire following a quarrel at Pulianthope on April 28. The victim, Gomathi, 34, a housekeeping staffer at LIC Guest House, suffered burn injuries to her face, neck and chest.

Arrest and Background

Her husband, Vijay Kirubanandam, a slaughterhouse worker from Pulianthope, was arrested on May 1. According to police sources, Gomathi was living with Vijay, her second husband, for the past 15 years, after separating from her first husband, Ganesh.

Money Dispute Led to Attack

Gomathi used to quarrel with Vijay and his mother after they borrowed 8 lakh from her, which she had received as her share from her father's property six months ago. On April 28, during a similar quarrel, Vijay poured petrol on Gomathi and set her on fire, after which she lost consciousness, police sources said.

Medical Treatment and Legal Action

The next morning, she underwent treatment at a private hospital in Pattalam and was taken to the Govt Peripheral Hospital in Periyar Nagar, from where she was referred to the Rajiv Gandhi Govt General Hospital for further treatment. Pulianthope police registered a case on May 1 and arrested Vijay. He was remanded in judicial custody.
