In a shocking incident of deception, a Chennai-based businessman fell victim to a cunning curse scam, losing gold jewellery worth a significant amount. The event unfolded in the bustling area of Sowcarpet, highlighting a brazen new tactic employed by criminals.
The Deceptive Encounter
Deepak Jain, a resident of Mint Street, was returning home from a temple on Wednesday when he was approached by two unidentified men. The duo had allegedly been following him before they stopped him. They proceeded to tell Jain that he was afflicted by a serious curse or bad omen.
To add credibility to their story, the men held his hand and began chanting what sounded like religious mantras. They created a scenario of fear and urgency, convincing the businessman that the only way to break this supposed curse was for him to temporarily remove the gold bangles he was wearing.
The Theft and Aftermath
Believing their claims, Deepak Jain complied. He removed the four gold bangles he was wearing, which together weighed approximately 10 sovereigns. Following the instructions of the conmen, he wrapped the jewellery in paper and placed the packet inside his own bag.
At this point, the situation took a strange turn. Jain reportedly fainted or lost consciousness momentarily. Seizing this opportunity, the two men swiftly fled the scene with the packet containing the gold bangles. The victim only realised he had been cheated after he regained his senses and found the valuables missing.
Police Investigation Underway
Upon being alerted, the local police registered a formal case based on the complaint. Authorities are now actively investigating the matter. A key part of their probe involves analysing CCTV footage from the vicinity of Sowcarpet and Mint Street to identify and trace the two suspects.
This incident serves as a stark warning to the public, especially in crowded commercial areas. Police advise citizens to be wary of strangers offering unsolicited spiritual help or making alarming claims about curses, as these are often ploys to distract and steal.
