Chennai man shoots son with country-made gun after attack

A 52-year-old man from the nomadic Narikurava community was arrested in Mamallapuram for shooting his son with a country-made gun after the son attacked his mother with a knife during a quarrel. The incident occurred at the Narikuravar settlement in Pooncheri, near Mamallapuram.

Details of the Incident

Police identified the accused as Shekhar, 52, his wife Mala, 50, and their son Prabhakaran, 25. According to authorities, Prabhakaran frequently quarreled with his mother, demanding money to buy alcohol. On Friday night, during one such altercation, Prabhakaran took a knife and attacked Mala before fleeing the scene.

After Mala was taken to the government hospital in Pooncheri, Shekhar returned home, retrieved a country-made gun, and shot at Prabhakaran near the Maruthu Temple. The son sustained bullet wounds to both knees and was rushed to Chengalpet Government Hospital for treatment.

Legal Action

Shekhar was arrested on charges of attempted murder. Police also stated that a separate case would be registered against Prabhakaran for the knife attack on his mother. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the use of the illegal firearm.

This incident highlights the ongoing issues of alcohol abuse and domestic violence within the community, as well as the proliferation of illegal weapons in rural areas.
