Chennai Mob Attack: Van Driver Beaten to Death After Public Urination Incident
In a shocking incident of mob violence, a 30-year-old van driver was brutally beaten to death in Chennai early Wednesday morning following a dispute that erupted when he urinated in a public place. The tragic event unfolded on Prakasam Salai in Broadway, highlighting the dangers of vigilante justice in urban areas.
Details of the Fatal Altercation
The victim, identified as Kalaiselvan from Pallavan Salai in Triplicane, worked as a load van driver and was unmarried. According to police reports, Kalaiselvan and his friend Balaji were traveling in an auto-rickshaw in the early hours of Wednesday after consuming alcohol. While seated in the vehicle, Kalaiselvan urinated, and the urine accidentally spilled onto a woman passing by.
The woman immediately complained about the incident, leading to a heated argument between her and the two men. Witnesses reported that several people in the vicinity came to the woman's defense and launched a violent attack on Kalaiselvan and Balaji. During the assault, Kalaiselvan fell unconscious from the severe beating, while Balaji sustained serious injuries.
Family's Anguish and Police Response
Upon receiving information about the attack, Kalaiselvan's brother Kalaivanan rushed to the scene and transported his injured brother to Government Stanley Hospital in an auto-rickshaw. Tragically, doctors declared Kalaiselvan dead upon arrival and sent his body to the mortuary for a post-mortem examination. Balaji remains hospitalized and is undergoing treatment for his injuries.
Kalaivanan has accused police of negligence, stating emphatically: "The incident took place near the police station, but they did not even call an ambulance. Police should arrest those who attacked and killed my brother immediately." In a powerful protest, Kalaiselvan's family has refused to accept his body until the perpetrators are arrested, forcing police to engage in reconciliation talks with the grieving relatives.
Investigation Underway
The Esplanade police have registered a case and are actively examining surveillance camera footage from the area to identify the attackers, who fled the scene immediately after the assault. As of now, police have neither identified nor arrested any suspects in connection with the fatal beating.
