A policeman in Chennai has been arrested for allegedly forcing a minor boy to consume alcohol and attempting to sexually abuse him. The accused, identified as Velappan, 35, was attached to the Vadapalani police station and was arrested by the Ashok Nagar police under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.
Incident Details
According to police reports, a 16-year-old Class XI student from Kanyakumari district had arrived at his uncle's apartment in Kodambakkam with his parents two days prior for school holidays. After the parents returned to their hometown, the boy stayed at the relative's house. On Wednesday night, Velappan visited the uncle's residence, where both men consumed alcohol together. Later, the uncle fell asleep, leaving the boy alone in the bedroom watching television.
Assault and Escape
In the middle of the night, Velappan entered the bedroom and sexually abused the boy, also forcing alcohol into his mouth. The boy managed to overpower the policeman, hitting him with a TV remote and screaming for help. He then escaped, latched the house door from outside, and rushed to the Ashok Nagar police station to report the assault. Police immediately responded, arrested Velappan at the uncle's house, and registered a case under the Pocso Act.
Legal Proceedings
Velappan was produced before a magistrate court and remanded in judicial custody. The Ashok Nagar assistant commissioner of police, Altrin, has recommended departmental action against the errant policeman for his misconduct. The case highlights the importance of swift action in child protection cases under the Pocso Act.
