Major Seizures by RPF and Police in Chennai During Election Checks
In a significant crackdown, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and local police in Chennai have conducted extensive checks across the city, resulting in the seizure of substantial amounts of cash, gold, and banned tobacco products. These operations are part of heightened vigilance during the election period, aimed at curbing illegal activities and ensuring compliance with regulations.
Cash and Gold Seized at Chennai Central Railway Station
At Chennai Central railway station, RPF personnel made two major interceptions on Wednesday. In the first case, a 27-year-old man from Odisha, identified as Santosh Ram, was detained after arriving on the Howrah Mail. He was found carrying 60 lakh in cash but failed to produce valid documents to justify the amount. Following the seizure, Santosh Ram was handed over to the Income Tax department for further investigation and legal action.
In a separate incident at the same station, the RPF's election special team seized four gold bars weighing a total of 289 grams, along with 7.5 lakh in cash. The items were confiscated from Padmanaban Jayaraj, a 43-year-old native of Salem, who was traveling on the Coimbatore-Chennai Express. This seizure highlights the ongoing efforts to monitor and prevent the unauthorized movement of valuables during sensitive times.
Banned Tobacco Products Confiscated in New Washermenpet
Meanwhile, election flying squad officials conducted a raid in New Washermenpet on Tuesday night, leading to the seizure of 30 kilograms of gutka, a banned tobacco product. The contraband was discovered in an autorickshaw that was intercepted at the junction of SN Chetty Street and Veera Raghavan Street. The driver, Pushparaj, aged 32, was detained in connection with the illegal possession and transportation of the banned substance.
These coordinated efforts by the RPF and police underscore the commitment to maintaining law and order in Chennai, particularly during election seasons. The seizures not only disrupt potential illicit activities but also serve as a deterrent to others involved in similar practices. Authorities continue to monitor key locations and transport hubs to ensure compliance with legal standards and prevent the flow of unauthorized goods.
The operations reflect a proactive approach by law enforcement agencies to safeguard public interests and uphold regulatory frameworks in the city.
