Shocking Suicide Attempt in Chennai Courtroom Before Life Sentence
In a dramatic and distressing incident at the sessions court within the Chennai Collectorate complex, an undertrial prisoner attempted suicide by slitting his throat just moments before the judge delivered a verdict sentencing him to life imprisonment. The event unfolded on Thursday, sending shockwaves through the judicial proceedings and raising serious questions about courtroom security protocols.
Chaotic Scene as Suspect Uses Hidden Blade
The courtroom was packed as seven accused individuals, including Manikandan, a 32-year-old resident of Kodungaiyur, were produced for the verdict in a homicide case. As the proceedings neared their conclusion, Manikandan suddenly pulled out a blade that had been concealed in his shirt collar. In a swift and desperate move, he inflicted deep cuts on his neck, stomach, and chest, leaving the judge, lawyers, and other attendees in a state of stunned disbelief.
North Beach police personnel, who were present in the court, immediately intervened to prevent further harm. They rushed Manikandan to Government Stanley Hospital for urgent medical treatment. Despite the commotion and the gravity of the situation, the judicial proceedings were not halted. The judge proceeded to deliver the verdict, demonstrating the resilience of the legal system in the face of such disruptions.
Verdict and Aftermath of the Courtroom Incident
Following the chaotic episode, the judge found three of the accused—Manikandan, Suresh, and another individual also named Manikandan—guilty of murder. Each was sentenced to life imprisonment along with a fine of 3,000 rupees. The remaining four accused were acquitted, as the prosecution failed to substantiate the charges against them with sufficient evidence.
After receiving medical care and being stabilised at the hospital, Manikandan was discharged. He was subsequently transported to Puzhal central prison, where he will serve his life sentence alongside the other two convicts. This sequence of events highlights the intense pressures and emotional turmoil that can accompany high-stakes legal battles, particularly in cases involving severe penalties like life imprisonment.
Security Lapse Investigation Initiated
In response to the incident, the North Beach police have launched a separate inquiry to investigate the security lapse that allowed Manikandan to smuggle a sharp object into the courtroom. This investigation aims to identify vulnerabilities in the current security measures and implement stricter protocols to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The ability of an undertrial to conceal and use a blade in such a controlled environment has raised significant concerns about the effectiveness of screening procedures at court entrances.
