Chhattisgarh Government Suspends SDM After Tribal Man's Death in Alleged Assault Case

The Chhattisgarh government took decisive action on Wednesday by suspending Balrampur's Kusmi sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Karun Dahariya. This suspension is directly linked to an alleged assault that resulted in the tragic death of a tribal man, occurring just two days after the officer was arrested and remanded to jail in connection with the same case.

Suspension Order and Official Response

According to the official order, Karun Dahariya will remain attached to the Surguja divisional commissioner’s office in Ambikapur throughout the suspension period. This move underscores the government's commitment to addressing the serious allegations and ensuring accountability in the matter.

Details of the Incident in Hanspur Village

The suspension follows a distressing incident that unfolded on the night of February 15–16 in Hanspur village, located within the Kusmi block. Reports indicate that SDM Karun Dahariya, accompanied by three civilians, allegedly intercepted three villagers as they were returning from their fields. The group was assaulted on suspicion of involvement in illegal bauxite mining activities.

The victims of this alleged assault have been identified as Ram Naresh Ram (aged 60 or 62), Ajit Oraon (60), and Akash Agariya (20). Following the incident, all three were urgently taken to the Kusmi community health centre for medical attention. Tragically, Ram Naresh Ram succumbed to his injuries and passed away during treatment at the facility.

Legal Proceedings and Community Mobilization

Based on the statements provided by the injured survivors, police authorities registered a formal case at the Rajpur police station. The case names SDM Karun Dahariya and his three associates as the accused. This development has not only triggered legal action but also sparked significant political and community mobilization across the Kusmi region.

Local sources reveal that the victim's body was handed over to the family late on Tuesday, following a day of sustained protests organized by the Sarv Adivasi Samaj and the Congress party. Due to the body beginning to decompose, the cremation was conducted on the same night. Meanwhile, the two other victims, Ajit Oraon and Akash Agariya, continue to receive medical treatment at the Kusmi health facility, with their conditions being closely monitored.

This case highlights critical issues of governance, tribal rights, and law enforcement in the region, drawing widespread attention and calls for justice.
