CID Intensively Questions VSR Ventures Owner Over Fatal Baramati Aircraft Crash
The state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) conducted a rigorous three-day interrogation of V K Singh, the owner of VSR Ventures, last week. This questioning is a critical part of the ongoing investigation into the tragic plane crash near the Baramati airstrip on January 28, which resulted in the deaths of former deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar and four other individuals.
Detailed Investigation into Company Operations and Aircraft Maintenance
Additional Director General of Police (CID) Sunil Ramanand provided insights into the interrogation process. "We questioned Singh in extensive detail over the last three days," Ramanand stated. "Our focus was on gathering comprehensive information about how the company functions, the maintenance protocols for its aircraft, the procedures for assigning pilots, and other intricate details that are vital to our investigation."
The CID quizzed Singh from Thursday to Saturday, marking a significant step forward in the probe. Ramanand emphasized that the investigation is being conducted in coordination with two central agencies that are also examining the crash. "The CID's investigation will only be finalized after we receive and analyze the reports from these central agencies," he explained. "We plan to meticulously study these reports and cross-verify Singh's statements with the findings to ensure accuracy and completeness."
Background of the Tragic Incident and Initial Investigation Steps
The fatal crash involved a Learjet aircraft operated by VSR Ventures, which was transporting Ajit Pawar from Mumbai to Baramati on the morning of January 28. The aircraft crashed just before landing, leading to the immediate loss of all five individuals on board. In response, the state government transferred the investigation of the accidental death report to the CID on January 29, underscoring the seriousness of the incident.
Earlier this month, the CID had formally written to VSR Ventures, posing several critical queries regarding the crash. However, the company did not provide any responses at that time. Ramanand noted a breakthrough following the interrogation: "But now, after questioning Singh, we have obtained most of the answers to the queries raised in that initial letter," he revealed. This development has significantly advanced the investigative process.
Key Areas of Focus in the CID's Ongoing Probe
The CID's inquiry has centered on several crucial aspects of the flight and company operations. Specifically, the agency sought detailed information on:
- How the aircraft was booked for the journey
- The identity of the individual or entity that booked the flight from Mumbai to Baramati
- The procedures for assigning pilots and crew members
- The maintenance history and protocols for the aircraft involved
Ramanand highlighted that the CID is currently concentrating on the flying history of the two pilots and other relevant details about them. "We will thoroughly examine all reports related to the aircraft crash before drawing any conclusions," he asserted, emphasizing the methodical and thorough nature of the investigation to ensure all factors are considered.
