CID Intensifies Probe into Fatal Aircraft Crash That Killed Ajit Pawar
The Maharashtra state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) conducted a significant interrogation on Thursday, questioning V K Singh, the proprietor of VSR Ventures, in connection with the tragic aircraft accident near Baramati airstrip. The crash on January 28 resulted in the deaths of then deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar and four other individuals, marking a profound loss for the state.
Extended Questioning at CID Headquarters
A dedicated team of CID officials engaged Singh in an exhaustive questioning session lasting more than six hours at the CID headquarters located in Pashan, Pune. Singh arrived at the facility around noon and was escorted to a room on the first floor, where investigators meticulously gathered information. Additional director general of police (CID) Sunil Ramanand confirmed to TOI that Singh cooperated fully with the investigation into the accidental death report (ADR) case. Officials indicated that Singh might be summoned again for further questioning as the probe progresses.
Background of the Investigation
The state government formally transferred the investigation of the ADR to the CID on January 29, just one day after the devastating crash. VSR Ventures, which operates a fleet of aircraft, had one of its planes chartered for Ajit Pawar's journey from Mumbai to Baramati on the fateful day. Last month, the CID initiated correspondence with the company, seeking clarifications on multiple critical aspects of the flight. The queries included:
- Detailed procedures on how the aircraft was booked and the identity of the individual who arranged the specific flight from Mumbai to Baramati.
- Assignment protocols for the pilots and crew members involved in the operation.
- Comprehensive maintenance procedures and the historical maintenance records of the aircraft.
A senior CID officer disclosed to TOI that the company had not provided satisfactory responses to these inquiries, prompting the decision to call Singh for direct questioning. The officer emphasized that the CID's current investigative focus is on the flying history of the two pilots and other pertinent details related to their credentials and performance.
