CID Summons Abhishek Banerjee for Questioning in West Bengal Signgate Case
CID Summons Abhishek Banerjee in Signgate Case

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) team visited the residence of Abhishek Banerjee on Friday afternoon, following the questioning of two MLAs in the ongoing 'signgate' case. Sources indicate that the legislators' statements corroborated evidence collected by investigators so far.

Summons Issued

Banerjee has been directed to appear before the agency on June 14 in the first half of the day for questioning related to the case. Additionally, a fresh summons was issued to Trinamool Congress MLA Kunal Ghosh on Friday, requiring his appearance in the second half. Ghosh had previously been questioned by the CID.

Possible Confrontation

Sources revealed that if investigators are not satisfied with Banerjee's statement on Sunday, they may arrange a confrontation between Banerjee and Ghosh as part of the probe.

Case Background

The case involves alleged irregularities in signatures on a resolution submitted to the West Bengal Assembly concerning key appointments, including the Leader of the Opposition and other legislative posts.

Earlier, Abhishek Banerjee was questioned by the CID for nearly 5.5 hours at its Bhawani Bhawan headquarters in Kolkata.

Origin of Controversy

The controversy began after two TMC MLAs complained that no formal resolution was passed on May 6, alleging that signatures were obtained later and terming the document “fabricated.” Following the complaint, the CID registered a case and took over the investigation from the police on May 28.
